Distilled Scandium Metal

Scandium metal is silver gray rare earth. It oxidize in air and show light yellow or pink. The package should avoid fire, air, water and oxidizing agent. There are two different production methods for it, distillation method and reduction method. The distilled scandium get better quality than the reduced one. The distilled scandium is dendritic like crystal of metallic lustre. However the reduced one is broken irregular pieces.

Production

Scandium metal can be prepared by reducing the fluoride with calcium metal. It can also be prepared by electrolysing molten potassium, lithium and scandium chlorides, using electrodes of tungsten wire and molten zinc.

To produce distilled scandium metal, the oxide is converted to scandium fluoride and then reduced with metallic calcium and then distilled.

Scandium (Sc) doped aluminum nitride (AlN) is a kind of piezoelectric material widely used in radio frequency filters, ultrasonic sensors, oscillators and other devices. It can replace the conventional aluminum nitride (AlN) piezoelectric material used in internal radio frequency filters of mobile phones and fingerprint readers under ultrasonic screens. By introducing scandium (Sc) into AlN, the electromechanical coupling and piezoelectric coefficient of the material can be improved, thus achieving a more efficient conversion of mechanical energy to electrical energy.
