A 500 metre stretch of highway in the Netherlands is being lit by photoluminescent paint as an alternative to street lights.

The new technology is the brainchild of Dutch engineering firm Heijmans and interactive artist Daan Roosegaarde, according to the BBC. It says a test programme is taking place on the N329 in Oss, approximately 100km south east of Amsterdam.

Called the Futuristic Highway, Heijmans says the project saves energy and improves safety. The paint charges during the day and then lights up the road for up to ten hours at night.

The temperature responsive road paint shows ice crystal patterns when temperatures fall below freezing to warn drivers of dangerous conditions. Interactive lights illuminate when other vehicles approach and then dim again when they pass.
